Shenzhen Zhongshuge: A Fusion of Art and Commerce

Xiang Li's Award-Winning Bookstore Design Pays Tribute to Shenzhen's History

The design stands out for its large window design that offers an unobstructed view of the exquisite interior, creating a feast for the senses. The giant spiral staircase shaped bookshelf serves as an art installation, carrying both the function and the spirituality of the space. This novel approach breaks the shackles of the monotonous attributes of a space bound to function, offering consumers a unique shopping experience.

The realization of this design involved a massive spiral staircase shaped bookshelf lying on the ground, running in a curved trajectory through the entire concept area of the bookstore. The continuous flowing contours of the display table are like water, outlining the curving lines of the interior traffic flow. The symbolism of the ladder of wisdom is integrated with the bookshelves into a towering ladder, creating a sacred temple of knowledge.

One of the challenges faced in the design process was the realization of the spiral staircase installation. Due to its complicated shape, the junctions between the installation and the space elevations and floor all have different sizes and angles. Careful calculation and adjustment were made during the design and modeling of the installation to ensure a perfect result.

The design of Shenzhen Zhongshuge is a tribute to the cultural and historical background of Shenzhen. Over the past 40 years, the city has made great achievements as a Special Economic Zone, attracting worldwide attention. These achievements are the result of the hard work of countless pioneers and dreamers. The design of Shenzhen Zhongshuge hopes to pay tribute to the creators of history on this land and to become a symbol of Shenzhen itself.

The project, which covers a floor area of 1300 sqm, was completed in November 2021 in Shenzhen, Guangdong, China. The design approach to fuse commerce and art breaks the shackles of the monotonous attributes of a space bound to function, conveys the brand's values, and brings a new and novel place gene to consumers' shopping experience.
